Miniera di sale di Petralia (Miniera di sale di Petralia Soprana), Petralia Soprana, Provincia di Palermo, Sicilia, Italia

Petralia salt mine is an active mine operated by the company Italkali, situated between Raffo and Salinella, about 2.5 km to the east of Petralia Soprana, on the left side of River Salso (whose name meaning "salted" is partly due to the erosion of salt-bearing rocks in this area).

The mine is located in a lens-shaped, massive, and highly deformed salt body of the Caltanissetta evaporite basin. Recrystallization appears to be very pervasive. The halite facies is uniform and equigranular with negligible impurities. A highly folded stratification, with thick white halite strata alternating with very thin dark clay horizons, is clearly visible. Despite the high deformation and recrystallization grade, some halites still contain a small core of primary "cloudy" crystal. Monophase or two-phase fluid microinclusions in halite are abundant.

Rock salt mining for alimentary needs of the local population in the area of Salinella has been undertaken since old time, but until the 1950s remained a marginal operation. The setting up of modern production facilities (underground mining, sorting, packing, and warehousing) started in 1972. To date, more than 70 kilometres of tunnels have been excavated and the entire process for production of both food-grade and non-food-grade rock salt (from mining to packing and storing) is performed underground.
