One of a series of near parallel baryte lodes in host siltstone of the Curdimurka Subgroup, and occurring on the eastern margin of the Oraparinna Diapir. The lodes were exposed by SA Barytes during 1972, with ~8,000 tonne mined. Total recorded production from 1972-80 was 12,334 tonne. Tenure was transferred to Steetley Industries in 1981. Resource estimate in 1975 was 8,000 tonne. Local Geology is breccia zone in contact with a massive, dark green amphibolite (dolerite) on its western side , with baryte occurring in the breccia as flat-lying sheets, blocks in breccia, or in veins. The result of the diverse forms is workings spread out over an area of ~4.5Ha, and consisting of a series of shallow dozer cuts, scrapes, and pits. The dominant rock types in the breccia include siltstone and shale with a soft carbonate breccia matrix. Clasts of quartzite, dolomite, and calc-silicate, presumably of the Wilyerpa Formation, are common. Micaceous hematite is common on joint planes. Barite infills narrow veins that dip low to the NW. At least 2 prominent veins to 1m and 2m thick crop out as extensive sheets on the eastern and northern slopes of a hill. Other areas of blocks of baryte probably represent disrupted portions of the shallow-dipping veins. Calcite occurs as fracture fill, and on cleavage planes. Typical baryte at Bowering is pink, with a characteristic mottled appearance, the colouration being due to alteration of calcite to iron oxide, with subsequent discolouration along joints. Barite quality was tested in 6 samples for Ba +Sr values ranging from 92.72 to 96.7, average 95.5%. Values for colour, moisture content, iron, alkalis exceeded those for requirement for industrial use, and were satisfactory for oil drilling grade.
