The deposit was developed by prospectors, Kelly and Penny (surnames), just after 1900. Up until 1912 they had raised 8736 tonnes of ore for 8074 ounces of gold.
The Gambier Lass Gold Mining Company NL was floated in 1935, with 50 000 pounds capital to re-open the mine. Less than 18 months later, they determined little gold remained, and switched attention to the Anglo Saxon Gold Mine, 25 kilometres to the east, with no better results. The company was voluntarily liquidated in 1937, and the sale of the plant and equipment etc in 1938, saw investors re-gain only a fraction of what they had spent.
Gold was found in quartz veins, cutting early foliations, and overturned folding, in conglomerate and sedimentary units forming the host rocks.
The deposit lies over granitoid, faulted against a deformed granitoid pebble conglomerate, near the eastern margin of the Keith-Kilkenny tectonic zone. It is a fault scarp conglomerate derived from the erosion of the granitoid to the east.
Gold is associated with moderately west dipping quartz veins in a major north-west trending shear zone, within the granitoid conglomerate. Quartz veins are hosted within the foliated granitoid, and related fault scarp material of quartz-sericite schist, and shows intense but narrow sericite-carbonate alteration at the vein margins. The gold is associated with pyrite.
The mine borders the Leonora-Nambi Road, about two thirds of the way to Mertondale. Little remains at the site to see.
