Ordinary Chondrite, Low-Iron (L5)
Fell, January 1976; 45.5 g, in the Mjøsa Lake about 1200 m of the beach at Nes Peninsula.
Fragments of a small single stone were recovered from the ice. Griffin & Jorgensen (1979) have provided a relatively complete description of this unusually small meteorite. Olivine (Fa23.7) and pyroxene dominate the chondrules and matrix. Troilite is perhaps more conspicuous than Fe-Ni metal with minor amounts of chromite, plagioclase, and augite. While most of the olivines and pyroxenes are largely equilibrated, glass is found as well.
Grefsheim is one of 9 confirmed Norwegian meteorite falls listed with the Meteorite Bulletin Database as of late 2015. All of the witnessed Norwegian falls are chondrites (7 ordinary chondrites and 2 carbonaceous chondrites), but Grefsheim is the only Norwegian falls classified as exactly "L5" (relatively low bulk iron; moderately well-equilibrated olivine and pyroxenes at the local level).
