Unequilibrated Ordinary chondrite, brecciated (L3-4,br; S3)
Fell, 1941; 600 g
Several fragments of a brecciated and shocked meteorite stone were recovered near Mafra at an indefinite date and one 8X6X5 cm stone was preserved. Prominent rounded olivine and pyroxene chondrules (and fragments) dominate a microcrystalline matrix with turbid glass. Olivine is unequilibrated and marked by kink bands due to shock. Both orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene are present as well as minor plagioclase. Accessory troilite is also present, but Fe-Ni metal is apparently quite sparse. A small C-bearing clast was noted. Small mineralogically uncharacterized phosphates are also reported.
The meteorite is described as a 'genomict breccia' as its primary constituents are a mechanical mixture of equilibrated L4 material with unequilibrated L3 material derived, presumably, from the same original parent body. Some additional complexities, small microchondrules, and small blebs would be due to the forcible impact that brought the material together before (or during) an eventual ejection into space.
Mafra is the only witnessed L3-4 meteorite fall currently listed at the Meteoritical Bulletin Database. Its 600 g mass exceeds the total mass of the 3 small L3-4 finds that have also been recovered (as of Oct 2015).
