During its initial mining period of 1894 to 1907, the mine was considered the mainstay of the district for gold production. It is located just north-east of the former Kunanalling townsite, and south-east of the Catherine mine.
The Premier Gold Mining Company was formed in Adelaide in 1894 with 50 000 pounds capital. During its period it produced 63 372 tonnes of ore for 47 554 ounces of gold. Its peak period was 1900, with around 15 000 tonnes of ore for 10 000 ounces of gold. The ore bodies were 2 to 4 feet wide, and the lease contained a 20 head battery, and cyanide plant. The workings were down to 300 feet, but below this gold values virtually dis-appeared, leading to the company to collapse by 1907.
The plant was described as the eyesore of the district soon after, and was being sold in parts to other locations in the Eastern Goldfields. Various prospectors gave the mine a go over the years, some producing small tonnages.
In 1938, the Kunanalling Gold NL acquired the leases. The geology at this time was stated as an East, Middle and West lode (or possibly named Premier, Main and Shamrock), as lenticular bodies of quartz in greenstone near the junction of a porphyry dyke. The company appeared to do little with the lease and prospectors are again working it by 1940.
The site is marked by an open pit mined from 1987 to 1989, in conjunction with nearby Catherwood mine by Kalgoorlie Resources.
