Blue topaz deposit. It is said to be within sight of the Grosmont gold mine. (Please note maps sometimes spell the gold mine as Grossmont, however historically should be Grosmont). While it has been a popular fossicking site over the years, the writer was unable to locate it. Recent nickel exploration has seen numerous tracks and diggings through the area, making the location of anything difficult.
The site is of interest as blue topaz is rare in Western Australia. The site was discovered in 1896, and some mining took place on the pegmatite. When next investigated in 1913, it was already abandoned. Mining during this period formed an opencut 15m in length, 3m wide, to 6 m depth. Nearby was a 9 metre vertical shaft. Some leases were applied over the pegmatite in the 1940's but it appears little mining has taken place since the original period.
The reference states the pegmatite is a 3-4m thick vein, but the opencut was in such poor condition from over one hundred years of neglect that no zoning or geology could be determined.
The topaz is said to be massive, opaque, light blue, pale blue or white. Light blue common opal is also noted at the site. Damourite as a purple coloured hydromica forming by the alteration of topaz, lepidolite overgrowths on muscovite and flat coarse grained plates 30 by 40 cms, white to light green Perthite.
