Ordinary chondrite, unequilibrated (LL3.2; S1)
Fall, 21 Sept 2013;1.54 kg, single stone
With a moderate clap, a single, nearly intact meteoritic stone fell ~ 1 m from a Mr. Silva while he was fixing a wagon. The strange black rock was soon noticed in a small pit. Portions of the stone have been sectioned for intensive study and have revealed an unequilibrated chondrite with clearly delineated chondrules (~65 vol%) up to ~3 mm in diameter accompanied dark matrix (~12 vol%), metal-sulfide (~6 vol%) and assorted fragments and grains. Prominent features include well-developed porphyritic olivine and radial pyroxene chondrules and unusual secondary fayalite grains in matrix. Composition of both Mg-Fe olivines and pyroxenes range from Fe-free grains in chondrules to Fe-dominant compositions in chondrules, rims and matrix. Fe-Ni metal is mostly kamacite, but zoned taenite includes evidence of both tetrataenite and antitaenite. Several other minerals as well as disordered carbon and glassy mesostasis are also reported.
For LL chondrites, Vicência's cosmic ray exposure age is an unusually high 72 Ma. Vicência is one of only four LL chondrite falls that have been classified as primitive as LL3.2. The other three are Semarkona (LL3.00), Bishunpur (LL3.15) and Krymka (LL3.2).
