New Santa Clause Gold Mine

GML 675N. Mined also in conjunction with Two Bells East lease (GML 810N), or other sources with instead Two Bells North lease (GML 859N). 24 acres in total. Described as four lines of parallel north north-east trending bluish quartz reefs closely associated with a jasper bar. In truth the lease was no different to others on the field, with quartz lenses in a wide low grade zone, with gold found in various rock types. Without digging up the entire lode, it was largely impossible for underground mining methods in 1909, to make any of the mines a long term proposition.

The deposit was discovered late 1900 by J. Gordon and T. Toohey and party. The leases were held by various parties until 1914. Its most active period was 1909 to 1910. In February 1909, Henry Thornton Rowe took an option over the leases with the intention of floating a company. The press, now tired of mining scams, derided the prospectus. This document made statements by an un-specified promoter who turned out to be Rowe himself as the owner. Various mines were named nearby, one the Fenian, 20 kilometres away on a different goldfield. The document was littered with phrases like ' It has been reported to me'; 'Samples of stone shown to me'; 'It is a lode which I think...'.

Twenty thousand pounds in capital by willing new shareholders was raised with the Yaloginda Consols Gold Mining Company Ltd formed later in the year. The company's first shareholder meeting, again talked about how the mine was near others operating on the field, with little mention on what was being done to develop the mine. The mine manager's reports made outlandish statements like the mine would become a second Kalgoorlie (the richest mining area in the State).

A shaft had been sunk to 130 feet with 200 feet of driving. There was a 130 foot long tramway, and blacksmith shop. 1100 pounds had been spent developing the mine. This leaves the question of where the remaining 18 900 pounds handed over by shareholders went, when the company filed for bankruptcy in mid 1911.
