EET 83309

Ureilite, polymict (ureil-pm)
Find, 1983; 60.8 g, weathered

Elephant Moraine 83309 (EET 83309) is a small, very weathered meteoritic stone which had retained a small portion of its fusion crust when recovered. The interior — quite brecciated — is compositionally dominated by olivine clasts (≤3mm), lesser amounts of pigeonite, a few plagioclase clasts, small graphite-rich regions, and the distinctive ureilite oxygen isotope signatures. Iron oxide veins and stains have largely replaced most of the metal and sulfides which were once present. But EET 83309 is no ordinary ureilite as it was the first of the 'polymict ureilites' to be recognized. In addition to the olivine, graphite, and pigeonite found in almost all ureilites, the polymict ureilites are characterized by a multitude of clasts and inclusions which contain additional pyroxenes (e.g., augite, enstatite, orthopyroxene), plagioclase (missing from most ureilites), unusual nitrogen isotopes, and other inclusions. The entire suite of minerals found in the polymict ureilites is not easily characterized as they appear to be derived from diverse sources (a putative ureilite parent body (UPB), several ureilite parent bodies?, and elsewhere). Polymict ureilites have generated intense interest, however, because it is thought that their mineralogical diversity may provide vital clues as to why the the ureilites possess both (1) 'cumulate' mineral suites believed to require moderately large parent bodies and (2) isotopic signatures usually interpreted as characteristic of small bodies from within the ancient solar nebula.

Polymict ureilites represent slightly more than 5% of the ureilite population. While the theoretical implications of the polymict subgroup remain a work in progress, their mineralogical diversity can be appreciated 'as is.' Two other polymict ureilites with Mindat sites are the North Haig, Australia find (1961) and the Dar al Gani 319, Libya find (1997).
