The geological scheme comprises a fault zone between garnet-sillimanite gneis (kinzigites) sequence and alpine type peridotites (lherzolites) within the border of Alpujata Massif. The Linarejos fault trending N110/dipping 70º runs across the site generating a significant mineralization zone affecting both gneiss and peridotite bodies late affected by hydrothermal activity. The majority of the mining activities are located following the track of the fault.
The district represents an ancient mining group likely worked earlier by the Roman civilization for lead-silver ores, and lately during 1692 and 1826 (Iberica company). Original works were re-adapted to shaft and galleries widening during XIX century. Mining works were carried out mainly with shafts (Consuelo) and small adits (San Juan and La Romana) emplaced on weathered gneis running parallel to the contact zone between gneiss-lherzolite type peridotites. At surface, a gossan zone and brecciated material with silicification caused by hydrothermal action (chalcedony and grey jasper) are presented.
