Aachen Meteorit, Aachen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Deutschland
Ordinary chondrite (L5, S3)
Fall, 1880; 21 g, single stone
A small meteorite, which had apparently been collected, recorded, and almost forgotten, has been on display at the Lippesches Landesmuseum in Detmold for many years. No details are known except the label "Meteorite, fell near Aachen" and some suggestions— based on comparisons with other museum labels — that it had apparently been there for just over a century. Olivine (Fa24.6) and pyroxene (Fs20.5) compositions are those of an ordinary chondrite low in iron while textures indicate that chondrules and matrix are largely equilibrated.
Aachen is the smallest of the 9 witnessed L chondrite falls listed at the Meteoritical Society's "Meteoritical Bulletin Database and is one of only 2 German L5 chondrite falls. It is perhaps emblematic that the first meteorite listed in the Catalogue of Meteorites reminds us of just how little we known about so many details of these visitors from space.
