Iron Meteorite, IAB Main Group (IAB-MG)
Found 1854, 150 g

A mass of unknown weight was found by a shepherd and a small, crusted fragment was studied by Eberhard as part of a dissertation. Most of any additional mass has been lost so that mineralogical information about the meteorite is quite sparse. A weathered Widmanstätten pattern was observed as well as schreibersite crystals and troilite nodules. Enough material has been preserved to allow identification of the meteorite as a member of the 'main group' subset of IAB iron meteorites. The argument that Tabarz is paired to Seeläsgen accompanied by the further suggestion that both meteorites are part of a very large Morasko strewn field has been made (Bartoschewitz & Spettel, 2001). A very exciting idea, but one which presumably needs considerable additional detailed support.

The IAB complex of iron meteorites has 279 identified members and is thus one of the larger chemical defined groups of iron meteorites. Tabarz is one of 88 IAB members designated as members of the 'Main Group' of IAB irons. There has been some discussion as to the appropriateness of the current 'IAB complex' designation as perhaps a premature attempt to categorize a 'Group' with very poorly determined limits (see Goldstein et al., 2009). In this case, too, we will apparently need to wait and see.
