Gilsfjörður is a fjord that separates Vestfjörður and Vesturland at the northern bottom of Breiðarfjörður. It goes east from Breiðafjörður and reaches Akureyja between Tjaldaness and Króksfjarðarness. At high tide, large mudflats form in the fjord. Bird life is abundant. A bridge was put over Gilsfjörður in 1997 which shortened the route between the southern part of Vestfjörður and Vesturland by 14 km. A road built at the mouth of Gilsfjörður in connection with the bridge turned the fjord into a marine lagoon. The reservoir is 33 square kilometers.
On the southern side of Gilsfjörður, Ólafsdalur enters the country to the southeast. From the bottom of the fjord, a road leads through Steinadalsheiði to Kollafjörður in Strandum. It is only open in the summer, but was the main route to Hólmavík and Strandi between 1933-1948.
