SARIG Mineral Deposit Information,

"The Wheal Barton mine; developed on copper mineralisation in a quartz-goethite lode in host metasediment of the Cambrian Carrickalinga Head Formation. Copper and manganese minerals occurred within a shear zone in bleached greywacke, and sheared sericite schist, with bedding trending 003, and dipping 75-80 E. Drilling was carried out in 1989, with assay values of up to 12% Cu, 86 g/t Ag and 0.4 g/t Au variously returned from the supergene zones of sampled lodes. Copper-silver-gold mineralisation associated with shearing and quartz veining occurred along a strike length of 400m. Chalcocite was reported at depth. Most of the higher grade ore above the water line has been removed. Located 1km SE of Truro copper was discovered early in 1849 and for a few years a large amount of work was done with 100 men employed. 4 rich lodes were worked and a smelter and whim were erected. Work ceased in 1852. The mine was reworked in 1866 and 1867 when 77 tonnes of copper were produced. In 1878 a small quantity of ore was dispatched. In 1888 a mine was opened on the lodes and 7 tonnes of ore were dispatched. Some work was done at shallow depths in 1918 and 1919. the mine was reopened for a year in 1959. Reopening in 1965 the mine was worked until 1969. during this period underground work was resumed and a head frame, pump, winding engine and tramway were installed. Over the course of history of the mine many shafts, prospecting shafts, stopes and pits have been worked. Production figures for the mine are incomplete with 690 tonnes of ore averaging 20% recorded. It was noted that the disturbed ground was of bright, off-white colour, and apparently represented decomposed, kaolinitic rock, possibly suitable for use as cement shale, though no production was recorded."

"Discovery Year: 1849
Discovery Details:1849- Copper Discovered & formed Wheal Barton Mining Association; 4 large lodes worked, smelter built, town built, work ceased in 1852. Mine reworked in 1866-1867. 1873- Wheal Barton Copper Mining Co. ltd. was established. 1878- E. Brenton tookk up mine."
