Griekwastad is a small, rural town located a few kilometres east of a geological formation, the Ongeluk Formation. This consists primarily of mafic lavas (basalt) that contains pillow lavas and hyaloclastites that are interpreted as extruding in a shallow marine setting.
The Ongeluk Formation hosts abundant layers of jasper and brecciated jasper that is used commercially as an ornamental stone.
