Distrito Los Chihuidos-Las Cárceles
Uranium District.
75 km to the ESE of the town of Chos Malal there are several small mineralized lenticular bodies, 2 to 4 meters in length and width (exceptionally reaching 10 meters), with thicknesses ranging between 0.10 and 0.30 meters, composed of intermixed Cretaceous supracontinental sandstone lenses. They appear on the surface or at shallow depth (up to 10 meters) and its contents vary between 0.08 and 2.5% U3O8 (average 0.3% U3O8); Cu 4% and 3% of V2O5. The dominant mineral is carnotite, associated with chalcopyrite, malachite, volborthite and hematite. The district's importance is limited, it is estimated that its potential hardly exceeds 100-150 tonnes of U3O8. Although the volume of the reserves does not reach significance, the benefit of ores presents economic interest, because they can be processed by leaching, proving trials yields of 75% for uranium and copper and 25% for vanadium extraction.
