An occurrence near Duntroon.
An interesting area for geology and fossils. The Vanishing World Fossil Museum is in the town, showing local marine fossils from razor toothed dolphins to giant penguins. Other locations within a few kilometres of the town include the Takiroa and Maerewhenua Maori rock art sites; Elephant Rocks a collection of bizarre shaped limestone rocks used in the Narnia film (2005); nearby Anatini whale fossil site; Earthquakes being an area of limestone cliffs; basalt columns at Dip Hill Road; Waitaki Stone quarry; and the Maerewhenua rattling stones. Some of the stones rattle when shaken caused by the dissolving of calcite within the stone, leaving harder iron oxide fragments within a void.
