Ordinary chondrite (H5, S3)
Fall, 20 Dec 2008; 100 kg (30 kg and smaller)

The Tamdakht meteorite fell on December 20, 2008, near the village of Ouarzazate. The meteorite is scattered over a wide strewn field about 25 x 2 kilometers in area. There are two well-known small impact sites within the field. Co-ordinates are for the major impact location.

Tamdakht is a relatively equilibrated ordinary chondrite with abundant small, but somewhat indistinct chondrules (0.1-1.5 mm). It is mineralogically dominated by equilibrated olivine (Fa~18) and orthopyroxene (Fs16Wo2) accompanied by kamacite, troilite, taenite, and accessory chromite. Several indicators of moderate shock (shock level S3) are observed. Kamacite is deformed by Neumann bands and troilite is twinned. Albitic plagioclase is not completely equilibrated. Minor amounts of silicates, phosphates, and other phases are also observed. One measurement of oxygen isotope ratios is roughly consistent with L group membership, but somewhat removed from the main trend line.
