Carbonaceous Chondrite (CH/CBb S4)

In 2003 a single 16 kg metal-rich stone was found by a tractor driver during harvest time close to the Isheyevo village in the Southern Urals. Isheyevo’s bulk Mg-Si and oxygen isotope ratios mark it as a carbonaceous chondrite. In addition, its isotope rations and high Fe-Ni metal content (>50 vol%) indicate a more specific membership within the carbonaceous chondrite CR clan (CR, CBa, CBb & CH Chondrites). What is especially unusual about Isheyevo, however, is that it is a more or less half-half mixture of highly shocked CH- and CBb-like chondritic material. Both CH and CBb meteorites contain small chondrules and unusually high N15/N14 isotope ratios. Usually, however, CBb meteorites contain more Fe-Ni metal and CH meteorites contain more refractory inclusions. While Isheyevo’s overall lithology is dominated by regions with 40-50 vol% Fe-Ni metal, metal content varies from 7%-90%. Olivine-and/or-pyroxene components plus a few other minor components are readily identified within the chondrules and other lithic elements. Isheyevo’s non-metallic regions also contain unusually fine-grained hydrated silicates, sulfides, carbonates with intermingled glasses. Definitive mineralogical determinations for these minute and intermingled phases, however, is usually difficult.

While refractory inclusions constitute only about 1% of Isheyevo’ volume, they have been the focus of much recent work. Some of Isheyevo’s inclusion minerals were formed at very high temperature — apparently very near the beginning of the inner solar system’s planetismal and asteroidal formation epoch. The fact that Isheyevo is nearly 9 times more massive than any CH chondrite and is more massive than any normal CBb chondrites provides welcome material for research.
