The Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council, also goes by the name of the Horizons Regional Council as a trading name.

The Region is divided into the Taraua, Palmerston North, Horowhenua, Manawatu, Rangitikei, Wanganui, and Ruapehu districts. Half of the Stratford district is part of the region while the other half is in the Taranaki Region. The two major towns in the region are Palmerston North and Wanganui.

The region covers the southern portion of the North Island, with the exception of the Wellington Region to the south, and Taranaki Region in the south-west. It incorporates a large section of the south coast, and small section of the east coast of the North Island, and extends into the southern central part of the North Island south of Lake Taupo. There is a section of flat plains between Wanganui and Palmerston North, however most of the region is hilly, together with major snow capped volcanoes in the far north of the region. Intensive agriculture is seen between Wanganui and Palmerston North, while the rest of the region is equally divided between grazing lands and forest.

Most listings are for the far north of the region in the Ruapehu District. Several now abandoned coal mines are found in the Ohura area, being the southern most part of coal deposits which extends north towards Hamilton and out of the region. The Tongariro National Park contains the highest mountains on the North Island, being a series of volcanoes. It is an interesting geological area, however the only mineral specimen site is at Ohakune, just south of the national park. Despite covering a substantial area, the rest of the region is a vast mining and mineral specimen 'desert', with only an old copper mine noted as a specimen site.
