New Celebration, Jubilee and Hampton-Boulder were once separate mines, although near each other. In 2002, the company operating the mines called Harmony, formed a 1 kilometre long superpit incorporating all three mines. It called the opencut the South Kalgoorlie Gold Mine, or locally it is referred to as South Kal Mines or HBJ. It is 35 kilometres south-south-east of Kalgoorlie, half-way between Kalgoorlie and Kambalda, and directly east of the Goldfields Highway.
Modern mining operations at New Celebration Mine started in 1986 by Newmont Australia Ltd, then in 1991 it became part of Newcrest Mining Ltd, and purchased in 2001 for $10 million (Australian) by Hill 50 Gold Ltd. Harmony took over this company later the same year.
Jubilee Mine was originally owned by Hampton Australia, but the mine was taken over by Normandy in 1994, and in 2001 by Harmony for $52 million (Australian).
In 2007 the combined mines now known as South Kalgoorlie was sold to Dioro Exploration NL for $45 million (Australian). A bidding war for Dioro broke out between Avoca Resources and Ramelius Resources, which Avoca eventually won in April 2010.
The mines are in the north north-west trending regional Boulder-Lefroy shear zone, which dips steeply to the west, is 100 metres wide with intense shearing. Further, are the Celebration and Resolute anticlines of mafic and ultramafic rocks, intruded by a number of porphyritic granitic dykes and dolerite sills, over lain by felsic volcaniclastics of the Black Flag Group. The Boulder-Lefroy shear zone truncates these folds, with gold occurring within or immediately adjacent to the shear zone.
Ore comes as brittle porphyries within the shear zone, or adjacent to the iron rich Kapai Slate; or as shear controlled mineralisation within basic volcanics and intrusives; or as quartz veins within basic volcanics and intrusives. Gold is found between the schistose country rocks and boudinaged granite porphyry dykes, as a stockwork of quartz-carbonate-pyrite veinlets.
