A local specimen miner obtains agate from this location, marketed as Crazy Lace Agate. 68t of ore was mined till 1992, but mining has continued since. The material is commonly available, and sold at the Tuscon show.
The agate is mined from a surface outcrop exposed in the Fortescue Valley floodplain, and occurs in association with siliceous caprock and calcrete.
The quality of the material decreases with depth becoming more friable and porous.
The deposit covers 0.4ha, with small areas in this producing attractive banded agate with good colour. Polished slabs of the agate often show quartz veins, and quartz filled vugs, surrounded by irregular zones of banded agate from colourless, red to yellows.
Maps place a Marillana Station Mine about 20 kilometres east of the station homestead, and very near the main road through the area, however confirmation it is the agate location is needed.
