"The lapis lazuli deposit of southern Baffin Island lies fifteen kilometres north of Lake Harbour, a settlement famous for its Inuit carvers. The "blue rock" has been known by the Inuit for decades but did not appear in any reports until the detailed geological mapping of the area in 1959. It lies within a marble that forms part of a series of highly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. The original sediments, probably deposited in a restricted marine environment, formed an evaporite." [Grice, 1989, page 129]
