The Shire of Mount Magnet is 570 kilometres north north-east of Perth, covers 13 692 square kilometres, and has a population of 664. Gold was discovered here in 1891, and the town of Mount Magnet gazetted in 1896. After the gold-rush most of the towns dis-appeared back into the scrub. Today the only town of significance in the shire is Mount Magnet itself.

The economy is based on the pastoral industry and gold mining. The town sits on the Great Northern Highway heavily used by trucks taking supplies to the Pilbara. Attractions include historic buildings along the main street, the Mining and Pastoral Museum, heritage driving routes to old gold mines and ghost-towns and wildflower viewing in spring.

As with a larger area of southern Western Australia, the shire sits in the Yilgarn Craton with its gold bearing greenstone belts. Gold has been mined at Mount Magnet since the 1890's gold-rush days, in a north-south belt directly west of the town. The shire contains many abandoned gold mining localities, but there are too many of them to list all on Mindat at present.

Gold specimens are generally not seen in private collections, as the material was historically melted down, and modern mining operations are no different. Gold nuggets found with metal detectors often come with vague location details, and may not relate to a specific mine as such.

Boogardie granite, mined in this area and sold locally and overseas as specimen material, is an orbicular granite found in only a few places in the world.
