Nya Kopparberget, Ljusnarsberg
Nya Kopparberget (Ljusnarsbergsfältet, Ljusnarsbergs kopparmalmsgruvor) were discovered in 1624. After some irregularities the authorities sent the Överbergmästaren (Chief Mine Inspector) Grissbach in 1632 to Nya Kopparberget in order to organize the people and make sure that they cooperated and sold the copper according to existing permissions& laws.
Very soon the mines became so successful that the authorities set up a new ”Bergslag” for the area together with similar miners privilegies as in Falun. Sometime later the name Nya Kopparberget stuck- in comparison to the old (New Copper Mtn- because the Old Copper Mtn= Stora Kopparberg= Falu gruva, http://www.mindat.org/loc-3154.html).
The earliest known production figures are from 1636 with 18 tons which rose to 53 tons the year after and with a peak in 1649 with 125 tons. Soon the richest parts were gone and production fell to around 50 tons yearly and further drop to ~20 tons during the latter part of 18th century. The years 1800-1840 gave only a few tons. New initiatives and capital became a success which gave rise in production again up to 100 tons, but in 1876 the metal production closed and the mining ceased in 1902. Total copper production was almost 7700 tons second only to the famous Falu gruva (Tegengren, 1924).
The following mines exist;
Älg-gruvan, Tyresgruvan, Stengruvan, Soopgruvan, Ljusgruvan, Tyskgruvan, Rålambsgruvan and Storgruvan – by far the largest mine in the field,
According to Tegengren is the geological setting similar as to Kaveltorp- but lack the dolomite-oficalcite part and the amount of Galena& sphalerite is much lower. For instance- no production figures for Pb exist. Magnetite has been produced, for instance in Rålambsgruvan where it occurred together with the copper-ore, also in some smaller mines outside the copper-claims.
