Located 3 km S of the mouth of Akatore Creek.

In 1958, P. Robinson discovered manganese in the area, and in 1965 H.H. Khoo studied the minerals from the lenses, noting an unidentified mineral. A. Reay and P.B. Read identified the new species Akatoreite in 1971, named after a nearby creek. At the time of writing, the species is only found at three locations worldwide.

It is a hydrous aluminosilicate from manganiferous metachert, and carbonate lenses on the south-east margins of the Haast Schist. Pink pods of manganese silicates and carbonates can be up to 1 metre wide, grading into buff to varicoloured manganiferous metacherts lenses up to 3 metres thick. These are scattered in felsic metatuff as a distinctive layer up to 50 metres thick, in phyllite and metagreywacke.

"Pale buff spots up to 2 cms in diameter are a fine grained mix of akatoreite in coarsely crystalline rhodochrosite and pyromangite, with minor rhodonite, spessartine, and quartz, rare prisms 1 cm long of heubnerite, and alabandite cubes, and veinlets a few mms thick of quartz, rhodonite, pyromangite, tinzenite and apatite. Other minerals found in the lenses are wad, psilomelane, pyrolusite, and todorokite filling veinlets, and blackening outcrops." (

The location is near the sea shore 2-3 kilometres south of the mouth of Akatore Creek. Attractive specimens have been commonly available, usually with akatoreite as orange-brown patches in pink rhodonite, and possibly cut slabs including the above, with veinlets of pyrolusite. Some areas contain lighter pink manganese rich nodules, which are very hard.

It is one of the few type locality species in New Zealand providing decent specimens. Forty-four gallon drums of the material were taken out by helicopter in the 1970's. The Otago Rock and Mineral Club have for many years held a mining right over the area, and more specimens may have come from this source. The location can be accessed through private property and needs the permission of the land owner, or clamber two kilometres along the rocky shoreline south of the mouth of Akatore Creek.

The rhodonite will fade from pink to brown, and eventually black if exposed to sunlight. The rhodonite may also turn brown from heating during cutting and polishing.
