Early 2002, a pegmatite deposit was discovered south of Kyini-taung where a telecommunication microwave antenna is installed.
The mining area is located in the southern part of Kyini-taung and is inaccessible by road. Most gem mining is illicit, although a few MGE-joint ventures were formed. The area produces mostly moonstones, almandine, tourmaline and other minerals.
In 2004 uranium-bearing minerals were discovered. In 2005 gem mining stopped and the area was taken over by the Myanmar Department of Atomic Energy. Gem mining operations reopened in 2006. - Ted Themelis (2008) Gems and Mines of Mogok
