A large salt lake, known for tektites
The Western Australian Museum has over 900 examples from the area.
Another one of the treasures from Australia, if you know what to look for. In Australia we call them Australites. Most scientists believe they were formed after a large asteroid or comet struck Indochina, 0.8 million years ago. This flung material up, and in the case of the rock which landed in Australia, just out of the atmosphere, forming unique shapes as they melted whilst re-entering. These tektites form a vast strewn field at approximately 25 degrees latitude across southern Australia. Most Australites are found in South Australia and Western Australia, due to its remoteness, and lack of tectonic upheavals.
Australites can be various shapes including sphere, oval, boat, discs and dumbbell. The most collectable are undamaged flanged button shapes.
