The mine is 5 kilometres south of Southern Cross. The last mining took place in the 1990's by St Barbara Ltd for gold.

The Transvaal Mine is located in the Southern Cross Greenstone belt. This contains a lower 3000 metre sequence of metakomatiites and basalts, with thin intercalated layers of graphite-quartz-biotite schist and quartz-grunerite banded iron formations, cut by lens shaped meta-gabbro sills. This is overlain by 1500 metres of pelitic meta-sediments with thin zones of carbonaceous sediments and sulphidic cherts at the base.

The Transvaal gold lodes are found in ultramafic schist and graphitic pelites subjected to lower amphibolite facies metamorphism. The main orebody is a mass of quartz-sulphide veins and splays controlled by the Transvaal Shear Zone. The main lode and associated halo forms a single well defined shoot 150 metres strike, 0.5-3.0 metres wide, trending north north-west, plunging moderately to steeply south to 200 metres deep.

The dominant sulphides are pyrrhotite, loellingite and arsenopyrite, with associated chalcopyrite and cubanite. Gold is found both as electrum and native gold. Electrum is the more abundant of the two, ranging 24-56 wt% silver. It occurs mostly at the interface between arsenopyrite-loellingite, or as inclusions in loellingite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite, and rarely as fracture fill within arsenopyrite.

It also contains related splays flanked by hydrothermally altered wall rock composed of diopside-actinolite-quartz. This grades outwards into hornblende-actinolite-biotite-plagioclase-quartz schist. Sedimentary outer parts (proximal) are biotite-muscovite-quartz-graphite. This is then surrounded by a distal zone of cordierite-quartz-biotite-graphite schist. Prograde hydrothermally altered minerals have been replaced by chlorite, talc, and zoisite.
