At Ohui (7.3 kg Au-Ag), quartz veins are found in rhyolite (Phoenix mine) and andesite (Great Mexican and Maori Dream), and a number of “sinter” deposits are present capping rhyolite of Phoenix Hill. Drilling by Austpac Gold N.L. has encountered several high grade intersections (e.g. 1.64 m at 61.4 g/t Au and 4100 g/t Ag in DDH4) but the veins appear to lack continuity (Barker, 1994).

There was a rush of claims pegged in this area from around 1894. Gold was discovered here by James McGregor in 1893 at the Old Nell claim, bordering Nell Stream at the northern part of the goldfield. Many of the leases pegged had little work done on them apart from some surface scratchings, and only the most major mines will be listed. The most activity was between 1895-1900, and some minor prospector work for the remaining two decades after this. Small amounts of ore was extracted, with some gold, however it was never a substantial goldfield (MacIntosh-Bell, et. al., 1912) states the Ohui area produced 109 tonnes of ore for 218 ounces of gold. .

Ohui is on the eastern coast of the Coromandel peninsula, about 20 kilometres north of Whangamata. There is no town as such, and just inland from the beach is a series on homes in the sandhills. Behind this is a narrow strip of farmland, assumed to be once the swamps (now drained) mentioned in the historic articles, and behind this inland the main range. Most mines appear to inhabit the seaward side of the range, close to its base with the former swamps. The Ohui Stream borders the area at its northern extremity.

No map was found for the mine locations. While written descriptions were found for mine locations, it was not substantial enough for any degree of accuracy for several of the mines (with the exception of the Phoenix Mine loaded by a local Mindat member).
