In 1814, iron and copper ores were discovered in Broomfield parish. In 1825, a copper mine was started on the hill at Wort wood. Two shafts were sunk and an adit was driven, but the property was soon abandoned. In 1845, the mine was revived using a steam engine and Cornish miners, but problems with the water in the mine forced it to close soon after. In 1853, local landowners agreed to restart the mine and two other small workings in the area, one of them near Raswell farm. The Broomfield Consols Copper and Silver-Lead Mining Company was formed and good quality ore is said to have been raised later that year. The mine closed again in 1854.
