MacDougall's Well Amethyst Diggings
Located on MacDougall's Well pastoral station, the Amethyst Diggings are a series of shallow pits and trenches following quartz veins, often with amethystine or smoky quartz cores. The field covers an area around three square kilometres at the northern tip of the outcrop of the high grade metamorphic Willyama Complex rocks (within the Euriowie Block).
These rocks border the much younger Adelaidean sedimentary sequence of rocks along a profound unconformity. The amethystine veins criss-cross the area with some single veins having a lineal strike of over 500 metres. The area is noted for green quartz which has been concluded as sun-bleached amethyst, as it regularly changes to amethyst with depth. Different shades, colour and clarity of the quartz can be found across the field.
The diggings have often been named as the Corona Amethyst Field, however Corona is the neighbouring pastoral station, which is crossed to access the area. The diggings are located on MacDougall's Well Station.
