Hewas , also known as Hewas Downs and as Great Hewas United, the mine included Wheal Elizabeth (aka Little Ventonwyn) and was latterly included in the workings of Kingsdown Mine (Hewas Water). OS grid reference SW972502 represents the approximate centre of the sett that extends for a distance of approximately 1.2 km.
It is reputed that between 1815 and 1822 Hewas Mine produced 100 tons of black tin per month. Official records indicate that in 1821 Hewas produced 482 tons of 5.75% copper ore, 1856 Great Hewas yielded 19 tons of 64% lead ore and 48oz silver, Great Hewas United in 1854-1869 867 tons of black tin.
In 1913 part of the mine was prospected with work commencing in 1919 under the name Kingsdown Mine. This work centered on four lodes striking E-W to the south-west of the Wheal Elizabeth section. Between 1919 and the closure of the Kingsdown operation in 1926 some 24 tons of black tin per month are said to have been produced.
