Forbes Reef is one of the oldest mining areas in South Africa. It was first opened up about 1880, under a concession obtained from the Swazis, and from that period onwards was worked spasmodically until 1913, when it was finally closed down. It was resuscitated in 1928 by the Swaziland Corporation, Ltd. (Bond, 1929).
