Several quartz veins are embedded in rocks metamorphosed to greenschist facies and belonging to the Apuane Metamorphic Complex.

The quartz veins of Gorfigliano were formed during the late stages of the tectono-metamorphic evolution of Apuan Alps. They are reported in two distinct areas: Grotta del Caprone and La Minierina.
At Grotta del Caprone veins are embedded in the metapelites of Scisti sericitici formation. Quartz is the most common mineral and it is associated, usually, with chlorite and hematite. Three minerals containing Th and REE were found in these veins: allanite-(Ce), synchysite-(Ce) and thorite. Other minerals present in this place are albite, anatase, calcite, chalcopyrite, fluorapatite, malachite, pyrite and rutile.
At La Minierina, quartz veins are hosted in metacherts and calcschists. The only phase present in this occurrence is quartz with minor calcite.
