The DL&W tunnels exited the Palisades cliff immediately west of the railroad's terminal in Hoboken. Originally passengers and freight, mainly anthracite coal, crossed to the city by ferry and barge. Later, the passenger traffic crossed via the Hudson Tubes commuter rail line, which has since evolved into the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) system.
