Southeast of Hochstädten, a northeast-trending zone of calcite marble occurs along the contact between granodiorite in the northwest (footwall) and diorite of the Felsberg massif in the southeast (hanging wall). The zone dips steeply southeast and narrows at depth. It can be traced from Kirchberg hill near Bensheim to Bangertshöhe mountain northeast of Hochstädten, a distance of about 3.5 km. The deposit is known since 1571, and has been mined since the early 18th century, first on Bangertshöhe mountain and later also on Ludwigshöhe mountain southeast of Hochstädten.

Along the contacts of the marble with the host rocks, thin zones of calcic silicates (mainly wollastonite, vesuvianite, hessonite and epidote), up to 0.5 m wide, were formed by regional metamorphosis. Xenoliths of the host rocks that are included in the marble have undergone the same transformation. This paragenesis can still be studied in the old opencast workings and also occurs in numerous outcrops in the area.
