The Province of Sassari was founded in 1859, even before the Unification of Italy in 1861, with an area which until 1927 included the entire northern sector of Sardinia. On January 2, 1927 the former district of Nuoro was detached from the province and incorporated into the new Province of Nuoro.
The Province of Olbia-Tempio, which existed de facto between 2005 and 2016, incorporated the eastern sector of Sassari Province, i.e the municipalities of Aggius, Aglientu, Alà dei Sardi, Arzachena, Badesi, Berchidda, Bortigiadas, Budoni, Buddusò, Calangianus, Golfo Aranci, La Maddalena, Loiri Porto San Paolo, Luogosanto, Luras, Monti, Olbia, Oschiri, Padru, Palau, San Teodoro, Sant'Antonio di Gallura, Santa Teresa di Gallura, Telti, Tempio Pausania, and Trinità d'Agultu e Vignola. After dissolution of Olbia-Tempio Province, all of its municipalities joined again the Province of Sassari.
