The Animas District is a former Pb-Zn-Ag-Au-Cu mining area which includes the eastern flank of Sultan Mountain and the area south and east of Silverton, S of, and along, the S rim of the caldera, to approximately 2 miles east of Howardsville. Its northern boundary roughly parallels the Animas River approximately 1+ miles to the N.

Local rocks include felsic and hornblendic gneisses, either separate or interlayered.

Regional geologic structures include the South rim of the Silverton caldera. Local structures include fissures radial to the rim of the caldera. Controls for ore emplacement were faults and fractures (fissures).
