The "Russia" Mine is one of many small adits in the Sounion area. Its name derives from the fact that many of the miners initially were from Russia. The name itself was coined by the locally famous collector Stathis Lazaridhis who was one of the few to collect in “unknown territory”. His use of the name stuck and was picked up by other local collectors. There is probably an “official” name (or number) for this working, but it is unknown (see also Wendel & Markl, 1996).

Locally it is also known as "Pefka mine".

(Note: until 28 October 2019 the descriptions for the Russia mine and the Barbara mine were mistakenly interchanged!)
