The San José copper and gold mine, located 45km NW of Copiapó, was started in the early 19th century to work two groups of NW-trending copper-bearing veins. It was owned between 1957 and 2010 by the San Esteban Mining Company (Compañía Minera San Esteban), which is now facing bankrupcy after the mine accident of 2010.

The San José mine became famous in 2010 for the mine collapse and subsequent rescue of 33 miners who were trapped 700 meters underground for 69 days.
