Officially, Slovenia is subdivided into 211 municipalities (eleven of which have the status of urban municipalities). The municipalities are the only bodies of local autonomy in Slovenia.
There is no official intermediate unit between the municipalities and the Republic of Slovenia. The 62 administrative districts, officially called "Administrative Units" (upravne enote), are only territorial sub-units of government administration and are named after their capital.
There are 12 Statistical Regions of Slovenia (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistical_regions_of_Slovenia ) which were created in 2000 for legal and statistical purposes, and these should be used as the top-level hierarchy on mindat.org.
Traditional regions of Slovenia during the Habsburg era were: Slovenian Littoral; Carniola; Carinthia (now mainly part of Austria); Styria (now mainly part of Austria); Prekmurje.
