The occurrence of manganese minerals in the so-called Schävenholz (Schebenholz) near Elbingerode, about 8 km south of Wernigerode, was discovered in 1817 by C.F. Jasche. The small deposit was mined from 1859 to 1869, first by the 'Kaiser Franz Mine' and after 1866 by the 'König Wilhelm Mine'. Sometimes erroneously called "Kuxloch Mine", but this mine is at another place near Elbingerode.
