Other/historical names associated with this locality:Rhône-Alpes

A famous old mine worked from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century (1914) for gold then for antimony. Seven quartz veins are known and have been exploited for their sulfides by shafts and adits. These deposits are spread over two districts: the La Combe district to the south and the Virieux district to the north. They are in the same geological context as veins of the Lavoute-Chilhac district in Haute-Loire.
Today, the La Combe district is an archeological site managed by the association "La mine d'or de Bissieux". Two tunnels were cleared and some visits are regularly organized but mineral collecting is strictly prohibited.
