Carrière de Ruffy
This is the biggest quarry in the Loire Department, in operation since the 19th century. The company "Carrières de la Loire Delage SA" digs into metabasalts, metagabbros and leptynites (devonian) cut by several large microgranite veins (upper carboniferous) to make road and railway gravels. Because of these granitic intrusions, many quartz and calcite veins are visible in the quarry. Some vugs in these veins may contain nice (and sometimes big) calcite crystals.
Note: Due to security reasons, public access is strictly forbidden to this quarry!
