Coal occurs mostly in isolated to partially isolated depositories. The coalfields have been subdivided into three basins, Cornelia, Coalbrook and Sigma basins.
The Vereeniging-Sasolburg coalfield is located just south of Vereeniging in the north to approxiamately 20 km north of Heilbron in the south. From Sasolburg in the west to Deneysville in the east. The coalfield is 30 km wide by 50 km long, in a north-south direction (Hancox and Gotz 2014).
