Island of Pantelleria is a volcanic complex composed of nested calderas characterised by peralkaline volcanic products; basalts occur on the northwestern side of the island. It is located in the northwestern end of the Pantelleria Basin at the center of the Sicily Channel, an extensional area generated since the Late Miocene. The rifting created deep troughs, namely the Pantelleria, Malta, and Linosa basins and favoured localised magma ascent to generate volcanism in Pantelleria and Linosa islands, and in submarine banks. Historical eruptive events in this area date back to 1831 (i.e., Ferdinandea Island) and 1891 (i.e., offshore Foerstner volcano).

The mineral found at the Cuddia Mida parasitic cone (591 m), north flank of Montagna Grande, and described under the name “Natronorthoklas” (Förstner, 1877) was named anorthoclase by Rosenbusch (1885).

Aenigmatite was described by Foerstner (1881) from the pantellerite lavas of Pantelleria under the name “cossyrite” (after Cossyra, the ancient name for Pantelleria). Titanium was not recorded in Foerstner's analysis and for a number of years cossyrite was considered as a varietal name for the apparently titanium-free aenigmatites of Pantelleria. Dittrich, that analysed cossyrite crystals collected by Soellner on the rim of the Cuddia Mida cone, eventually showed that cossyrite was titaniferous (Soellner, 1909). The identity of cossyrite with aenigmatite was confirmed by later studies (Fleischer, 1936; Zies, 1966).
