Önundarfjörður is a 20 km deep fjord between Dýrafjörður and Súgandafjordur on the northern side of the Westfjords. Önundarfjörður is considered one of the most beautiful fjords in Iceland and boasts pearls such as Holtsfjörður, Reykháfn on Hvilftarströnd and Ingjallssandi. Since the fjord opens up to the northwest, it is especially good in the evening sun, which produces very beautiful colors and lighting, especially in late summer.
The village of Flateyri stands midway on the northern shore of the fjord, known for the avalanches that fell in 1995 and 2020.
At the bottom of the fjord stands Hestfjall. On either side of Hestfjall are the valleys Hestdalur and Korpudalur. The heath between Önundfjörður and Dýrafjörður is called Gemlufallsheiði. According to Landnámu, Önund Víkingsson was the first person to live there (brother of Þórðar in Alviðra).
