A 1 m wide vein of mixed sulphides, mainly sphalerite and pyrite, with chalcopyrite and galena, occurs in greywacke on the shoreline near Kauri Mountain at Whangarei Heads, and may be associated with nearby andesite porphyry intrusives (Ferrar, 1925; Bell, 1976).

On the beach at Reef Bay there is a dense vein of mixed sulphides visible near low-tide mark. The vein is about a metre wide, vertical, and visible for 20 metres or so out to sea. There has been some underwater mineral collecting.

Note: This vein also outcrops in several places on private property inland from the better known coastal exposure (pers. comm. Rod Martin).
